Watertown-Cambridge Greenway Maintenance

Volunteers from our Pollinator Pathways committee have a standing agreement with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation to remove invasive plant species, plant native plants, remove litter, and be stewards for the space.

Come join our small crew, every Thursday morning, to enjoy some time outside and help this beautiful pathway stay green.

We will remove invasive plants (garlic mustard, Japanese knotweed, mugwort, etc.), plant and water native plants, add/repair rabbit cages, and pick up trash. We'll focus on the Greenway between the Huron Ave bridge and Cottage St.

Steady rain or downpours will cancel!

    Details:

    * Starting point is the benches at the Holworthy Place entrance in Cambridge.

    * Please bring: drinking water, garden gloves, and any tools (clipper/pruners/shears, trowel, garden fork) if you have them. Please wear long pants, long sleeves, and closed toe/sturdy footwear.

    * We will provide trash bags, gardening gloves and other tools as needed for the day's activities.

    * If you haven't yet signed a 2025 waiver, you will be asked to sign a waiver upon arrival.

    * Any participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

    Help keep the Greenway green!

Come join neighbors and path users as we work to remove invasive plants and restore wildlife habitat on the Watertown-Cambridge Greenway.

The focus for each Greenway work day varies, depending on which invasive species are the highest priority at the time. On summer work days, we will likely be cutting a patch of Japanese knotweed or mugwort, clearing out areas of mixed invasive plant species, and caring for the Pollinator Garden established on the Greenway in 2024. We'll update this page as Greenway conditions change, and make some decisions on the ground, depending on weather and the number of folks who join us!

Register to get reminders and event updates (and help us ensure we have enough snacks!).

    Details:

    * Starting point is at the trail intersection between Watertown Mall and 490 Arsenal Way (with bench and bike racks).

    * Please bring: drinking water, a hat, and garden gloves if you have them. Please wear long pants, socks, and closed toe/sturdy footwear. A kneeling pad or similar foam pad can be helpful. We also recommend long sleeves for protection against bugs and occasional poison ivy.

    * We will provide trash bags, and extra gardening gloves and other tools.

    * If you haven't yet signed a 2025 waiver, you will be asked to sign this waiver upon arrival. Any participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, or bring a waiver signed by a parent or guardian in advance.

The focus for each Greenway work day varies, depending on which invasive species are the highest priority at the time. This will likely be the last work day of the 2025 season, and we'll likely focus on getting leftover seedlings into the ground and caring for areas with fall blooming plants. We'll update this page as Greenway conditions change, and make some decisions on the ground, depending on weather and the number of folks who join us!
